Red White and Blue Swirl Bundt Cake
What’s more festive for the 4th of July than a Red White and Blue Swirl Bundt cake? You can make this cake with a little bit of effort and amaze your friends!
I know that parades and fireworks might be considered pretty festive 4th of July celebrations, but since I can’t create any of those things and I can make this cake, I’ve decided this is the way to celebrate!
I love watching the videos people post of fancy cake decorating. It absolutely amazes me what artistic creations are made from cake and icing. My friend Pam is one of those artists. She constantly creates cakes to suit customer’s requests that have me thinking… “how in the world?”

I’m amazed because my creative ability is severely limited in the cake decorating department. I usually smear some warm icing over the top of the cake and let it melt down the sides. I’ll toss out some sprinkles or maybe add candy to the top of the cake, but that’s the end of it.
Anything more just ends up looking like a pre-school student did the decorating. (I suppose that’s why the nieces and my kids were so much fun to bake with! See prime example here.)
This kind of a fancy cake, though, is easy enough that anybody can bake. Even ME! And look at that picture, it looks pretty festive doesn’t it?!
Since I’m challenged in the baking arena (give me a casserole or soup any day!) I rely on pre packaged ingredients for things like cakes and icing. I know, I know, that’s not very “foodie” of me.
But remember, this blog is about #ConvenienceCooking. That means the food is something that anybody can make. The ingredients are easily found. The directions as simple to follow. Nothing fancy going on here, folks.
As a single mom, working full time, going to school full time, managing two teenagers and all their extracurricular activities, I needed to have recipes that didn’t require fancy and expensive ingredients.
I couldn’t spend all day in the kitchen. So I collected recipes that were simple, easy and filling. This Red White and Blue Swirl Bundt cake is one of those recipes.
Make It a Meal:
This cake makes a great dessert for any Patriotic occasion. #MemorialDay and #4thOfJuly picnics are perfect. Add some ice cream and a cup of coffee, you’ve got the afternoon covered.
Tips:
If it’s easier divide the batter into 4 small bowls, even quarters, then color two and leave two white. Use a chop stick or wooden spoon handle to help swirl the colors around.
Alternately, you could make this in a regular cake pan or as cupcakes.
I added some colored sugar sprinkles to the top of this cake for a bit more decoration. (Told you that I’m not great with cake decorating!)

- 1/3 cup Oil
- 1/3 cup Water
- Food Coloring
- 12 ounce White Icing
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (or as recommended on your cake mix box).
-
Prepare cake mix according to package instructions. Mine asked for the eggs, water and oil as mentioned in the ingredients list.
-
Divide cake batter as follows: 1/4 in small bowl, 1/4 in small bowl, 1/2 remaining in original bowl.
-
Add red food coloring to 1/4 cake batter.
-
Add blue food coloring to 1/4 cake batter.
-
Grease Bundt cake pan. Pour in half of the white cake batter (1/4 of total)

Pour blue cake batter over the white. Tip the pan so your batter is unevenly distributed.
-
Add red cake batter over the blue. Tip the pan and use a spoon to spread batter up the edge of the pan a bit.
-
Top the red batter with the remaining white cake batter.
-
Bake as directed (usually 40-50 minutes).
-
Allow to cool, then turn out of Bundt pan.
-
Frost and serve.
-
Note on food coloring: start with a few drops, stirring to see color depth. Add more a few drops at a time until you reach the desired level of color.
