Pea and Peanut Salad Vintage Recipe
An old fashioned picnic favorite, Pea and Peanut Salad combines the fresh pop of juicy peas with the crunchy goodness of peanuts. It’s a surprising combination that works really well when topped with a creamy sweet dressing.
A staple of church potlucks and family reunion dinner tables, this salad has long been popular with farm wives in the Midwest. While the dressing plays a huge part in this salad, but is also a major point of contention.
Contention because of the debate: Helman’s vs. Miracle Whip. Â Putting brand names aside, this debate is truly about whether mayonnaise is better than salad dressing.
They have vastly different flavors, if you ask supporters on either side of the fence. I’m not going to take sides. I feel both ingredients have a place in the fridge and on the menu.
I made up this recipe using mayonnaise, however, you may certainly substitute salad dressing if that is your preference.

You really need to try this recipe. I know it seems like a bizarre combination, but it truly is delicious. Are you having a family picnic this weekend? Spend the $3 to make this salad and see that empty bowl come home!
Honestly, you can make this salad for about $3. And that’s assuming you have to buy any of the ingredients. You probably have the dressing ingredients already.
Make It a Meal:
Serve this salad with your favorite grilled meat and some Cowboy Beans. Add some cheesy potatoes and a pie, you’ll be all set!
Tips:
Remember to keep this salad chilled. I will place mayonnaise salads in one bowl, then set that bowl inside a larger ice filled bowl for serving at picnics.
Also, the peanuts will soak up the dressing, so it is best to do the final mixing of the salad just before serving. I will mix the dressing and peas at home and toss the peanuts in after arriving at the potluck.

This vintage pea and peanut salad recipe has been a hit at more potlucks than you can shake a stick at.
Variations:
One reader commented that she adds diced celery to her salad. That would be a good exchange for the peanuts if you have a nut allergy.
Other additions that folks have mixed in are: bacon bits, sweet bell pepper, diced ham, and red pepper flakes.
