Old Fashioned Oatmeal Pie
Summer time means old fashioned food. Cookouts with hamburgers, hot dogs and steaks on the grill. Baked beans and pasta salad beside the lemonade and iced tea. Dessert calls for foods that fill you up and taste great with ice cream on top. This old fashioned oatmeal pie is exactly what we need.
How do you finish off that kind of a meal? With PIE, of course! (and ice cream!!)
My mom makes a killer apple pie. I have a sister who comes in a close second place behind mom’s apple pies. I don’t even attempt to compete.

Pumpkin pies are Thanksgiving dinner requirements. Pecan pie accompanies Christmas dinner. As you can see, my family has a tradition of pie.
And ice cream. No pie is complete without an ala mode scoop of (preferably vanilla) ice cream.
I ran across this recipe for oatmeal pie last week. I thought it sounded pretty darn good. Plus, I had all the ingredients on hand. Yes, I have molasses in the cupboard. Because when you make Aunt Dottie’s New England Baked Beans and Boston Brown Bread, you use molasses!Â

Oatmeal Pie Recipe
Ingredients:
- 4 lg Eggs
- 1 c Molasses
- 3/4 c Milk
- 1 TB Butter
- 1 c Sugar
- 1 1/2 c Quick Cooking Oatmeal
- 2 t Vanilla
- 1/4 t Salt
- 1 (9-inch) unbaked deep dish pie crust
Recipe Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Prepare pie crust and place in deep dish pie pan. Set aside.
- Melt butter and allow to cool.
- In a large bowl, lightly beat the eggs.
- Then add remaining ingredients. Combine all ingredients until well mixed.
- Pour pie filling into pie crust.
- Bake 40 to 45 minutes, or until center is set.
- Let cool 30 minutes.

Servings Per Recipe: 8, Amount Per Serving: Calories: 392, Fat: 13g, Cholesterol: 13mg, Sodium: 500mg, Total Carbs: 55g, Protein: 10g.
(please remember these are approximate and will vary slightly based on your ingredient selections.)
Make it a Meal:
Serve this pie with ice cream (of course) and a cup of coffee for dessert. If you’re living on the edge, warm a slice and have it for breakfast. Oatmeal is breakfast food after all!
Variations:
Add 1 cup of chopped nuts to the mixture: walnuts, pecans, macadamia. Replace molasses with equal portion of dark or light corn syrup.

Now this is a first. I have never come across oatmeal pie before. It sounds amazing! I have to say this one is getting pinned – it sounds so unique!
Lydia, try it! It’s very similar in texture to pecan pie – very gooey and sweet! w/o the nuts (important to a lot of people)
I have never heard of oatmeal pie before. This looks very yummy and I wonder if it’d be good topped with fruit?
hmmm Derek, I’m not sure about the fruit… I think probably with the molasses flavor, apples or pears would be good (thinking pie filling type topping).
Now, I’m headed to the kitchen to see how that last piece of pie works with the strawberries I have!!

Oh Christine! I know exactly what you mean! I struggle with pie crust still. Even when I use mom’s recipe (which is pretty much fail proof). Keep at it, in time it’ll happen. Meanwhile, nobody knows that you “intended to serve ice cream, just that you put pie in front of them!
