Meat and Cheese Snack Board
When life gets busy, meals sometimes fall to the bottom of the priority list. An easy way to get some food in the family is to make up a meat and cheese snack board. They can nibble land munch as they go about the afternoon or evening and you don’t have to worry about a pile of dishes adding to the chore list.
The beauty of a meat and cheese snack board is that you can customize it to meet your family’s taste preferences.
I make one of these about once a month in the winter, due to our schedules. I make a meat and cheese board more often in the summer when it’s really too hot to eat much. We like traditional cheeses like cheddar and mozzarella. However, sometimes I add a new or unique cheese that I find while shopping.
I love the flexibility this dish provides. You can make it as large or as small as you want. I’ve made up a meat and cheese snack board for myself as a solo supper. I’ve also put them together to serve a crowd at the family gathering.
I usually try to put a few types of crackers or bread on the meat and cheese board to give folks options for building their snack bites. I’ve found my family likes smaller, bite sized crackers, meats, cheeses and toppings. I suppose it’s because we tend to eat these one the fly – picking up a couple items, stacking them on a cracker and popping it all in the mouth on our way through the kitchen.
If you were planning more of a sit down snack time, you could make your slices larger. I’ve even used slices of a baguette for the base on those occasions. You can make a lot of slices out of one of those loaves!
For this meat and cheese snack board I used some Italian spice and black pepper cheeses. They were a mild white cheese with the added spices incorporated to the cheese during the original cheese making process. They reminded me of pepper jack cheese in consistency and concept.
In addition to the meat and cheese, I like to add some salty, spicy or vinegary items to offset the richness of a the meat and cheese. Sometimes those items take the form of olives and pickles as you see here. Other times I add some vegetables, hummus or salsa.
