How to Make Potato Salad Three Ways

Every summer picnic features potato salad on the buffet table. I think there’s a law somewhere that says this menu item is a requirement. I like potato salad. I’ve eaten tons of potato salad over the years. I mean, what’s not to like? It’s cold, filling, and it contains Potatoes!

Usually, the potato salads at picnics I attend are made in a traditional manner. Some mayo, some mustard, a few hard boiled eggs, potatoes … viola! Sometimes you’ll find a recipe that includes pickles or olives. I love them all!
I have made other recipes of potato salad, because my husband doesn’t particularly care for the traditional style. My Amazing Sour Cream Potato Salad and Bacon Ranch Potato Salad recipes are quite popular. In this post, you’ll find my traditional recipe, so keep reading.
Once in a while, I like a salad that makes you reach for the tall glass of milk. My Kicking Potato salad does that. It’s got those lovely green jalapeno pepper slices tossed in the middle of the tomatoes, potatoes and dressing.
Take this dish to a Tex-Mex themed potluck and folks will be talking about your salad for days. You could add a bit of shredded cheddar cheese and a side of sour cream if you want to cool off the kick.
This last of the three potato salad recipes is made with sweet potatoes. I’ve added some apples and almond slices for some crunch. The name of this salad is “Spiced Up” because it’s full of spicy cinnamon and turmeric.
You don’t even have to pick just one of these recipes, you can make potato salad three ways and store it in the fridge up to a week for your own dining pleasure.
Make It a Meal:
Of course, you’ll want to have a main dish if you’re preparing the entire meal and not just taking the salad to a potluck. Grilled chicken, pork or steak are perfect main dishes. Then again, these salads also pretty good beside old fashioned hamburgers and hot dogs. Hurry up and make potato salad three ways!

Potato Salad Three Ways
Traditonal Potato Salad Recipe:
Ingredients:
- 6 med Potatoes
- 1 sm Onion
- 3/4 – 1 c Mayonnaise
- 3 TB Mustard
- 1/2 c Pickles
Recipe Directions:
- Cut potatoes into 1/2 inch sized pieces.
- Boil in large pan of water until fork tender. Drain, cool.
- Mix together mayonnaise, mustard and pickles.
- Toss cooled potato pieces with dressing.
Note: for variety use sweet or dill pickles.
Kicking Potato Salad Recipe:
Ingredients:
- 6 med Potatoes
- 1 sm Onion
- 3/4 – 1 c Ranch Salad dressing
- 1 TB Chile Powder
- 1/2 c Jalapeno Slices
- 1 c Cherry Tomatoes
Recipe Directions:
- Cut potatoes into 1/2 inch sized pieces.
- Boil in large pan of water until fork tender. Drain, cool.
- Mix together ranch dressing, chile powder and jalapenos.
- Slice cherry tomatoes in half.
- Toss cooled potato pieces with dressing and cherry tomatoes.
Spiced Up Potato Salad Recipe:
Ingredients:
- 3 lg Sweet Potatoes
- 1 lg Apple
- 3/4 – 1 c Mayonnaise
- 1 TB Cinnamon
- 1/2 TB Turmeric
- 1/2 c Almond slices
Recipe Directions:
- Peel and cut sweet potatoes into 1/2 inch sized pieces.
- Boil in large pan of water until fork tender. Drain, cool.
- Core and dice apples. (1/2 inch sized pieces)
- Mix together mayonnaise, cinnamon and turmeric.
- Toss cooled sweet potato and apple pieces with dressing. Top with almond slices.
