Homemade Taco Seasoning
Homemade taco seasoning, is there anything easier to make? I’m pretty sure there isn’t, except maybe a glass of water. But the homemade taco seasoning wins for powerful taste!
Knowing what is in your taco seasoning blend is good, too. You won’t get any “fillers” in this recipe.
The hardest part of this recipe is probably purchasing the individual spices. I mean the rest of the recipe is simply measure and mix.
I buy my spices from a variety of places. Most grocery stores will carry these ground spices. They are common enough that you might even find them at the dollar stores.
I have started buying spices in bulk from a couple of markets near me. I can control the quantity I buy – which is important because spices can loose their flavor if you don’t use large quantities. The average life span of spices on the kitchen shelf is one year.
Variations:
Make a batch, or even half a batch of this spice blend. Taste test it and see if it’s spicy enough for your preference. If it’s too bland, and you’re looking for more kick … increase the chili powder, red pepper and black pepper.
Suggestion – increase the amounts in very small bits until you reach the desired level of heat. If you jump in with a large amount of one or the other, you might over-estimate the power.
If the heat is too much, decrease the amounts of those spices by half the next time you make a batch.
The best thing about this spice blend is your ability to control the ingredients. If there is a spice in this blend that you don’t care for or are allergic to, leave it out and see how the blend tastes to you.
Make It a Meal:
Use this homemade taco seasoning in any recipe that you would use store bought blends. Sprinkle it over Mexican themed dips and soups. Rub it into meats before you grill them.
