Ham Salad Sandwich Spread
Old fashioned ham salad sandwich spread can be purchased in the local deli. But why buy it when you can make your own? Delicious, salty, filling, this sandwich spread sends you on a walk down memory lane. Why? Because it tastes like grandma’s ham salad sandwich spread.
This recipe makes the most of simple ingredients and you can mix up lunch in no time flat.
Ham salad is one of those sandwiches that always make me think of grandma, brown bread and waxed paper. My Grandma Chase didn’t fix fancy meals. She was from New England and was more concerned about being frugal while getting the most food fuel into her family.
She bought a hearty brown bread that was dense and nutrient packed. Grandma made sandwiches of all kinds on that bread. When my grandma packed a picnic or a hamper for a long drive, she wrapped the sandwiches in waxed paper. In the days before zip top plastic bags, waxed paper did the trick.

This is a great spread to make on those steamy hot days when supper seems like too much of an effort. Just mix up the three ingredients, slice some cucumbers and tomatoes, you’ll be all ready. Talk about “no effort”.
That’s what we did last week. I couldn’t bring myself to make anything heavy for supper and we’d mostly lost our appetites. 90+ degrees and 90+% humidity will do that.
A tall pitcher of iced tea and some crackers rounded out our meal.
I’m sure I ate plenty, it’s easy to do when you’re nibbling away at small bite sized snacks. Before you know it, you’ve taken in a full meal’s worth of food.
Make It a Meal:
Serve a side salad with your sandwich. Add a bowl of soup beside your ham salad sandwich spread covered crackers. Go really big, quarter a large tomato and dollop your ham salad in the middle of the tomato. Call that lunch!
Tips:
- Use a meat grinder to get really tiny bits of ham.
- Sharpen your knife skills and dice the ham into cubes that are about 1/8th of an inch in size.
- Take #ConvenienceCooking to heart and purchase your packaged, pre diced ham from the deli counter.
- Add shredded cheese or chip chopped eggs for more body in your ham salad.
Store leftovers in fridge for up to 5 days. Ham salad doesn’t freeze well. Note that this isn’t a low sodium food. You can control to some extent the sodium by choosing low sodium ingredients. But if you’re really watching salt intake for health reasons, this is a dish you’ll want to eat sparingly.
