Grandma’s Vintage Recipe Watergate Salad — 40 Comments

  1. I LOVE vintage recipes of all kinds! I don’t think my family ever made Watergate Salad but they did make another green jello-y delight that involved horseradish. It was never my favourite.
The recipe card and newspaper clipping did stir up memories for me because collecting recipes in that way was a favourite pass-time of my grandmas! I still have some of her saved recipes, carefully pasted into a notebook.

    • Bernie … I can’t imagine green jello and horseradish combined. That’s got to be something experienced to believe, I suppose. LOL

Our grandmas used the newspaper as a reference saved lots of clipped recipes, didn’t they!

I remember eating this sort of salad as a child. It always turned up at family gatherings. I cannot remember who made it, but I do remember it was good!!

    • I have food I remember that way too … never knew who brought the dish, but remember getting a serving or two and the dish being empty when it was time to go home!

Never had this before, I don’t think I’ve ever seen something like this. It sounds wonderful, but we don’t have all those pudding flavors over here. I would have to make one from scratch, but I’m intrigued. What I still don’t understand though, is why these desserts are called ‘salad’.

    • Nicole, that is the question of the hour! Nobody knows why these kind of desserts are called salads. I’m sure there’s a reason, but danged if I could make one up! Perhaps it’s so you have less guilt when you say “I had three helpings of salad” compared to “I had three helpings of dessert” … LOL

I love vintage recipes! Making some of my grandmother’s dishes just brings her back in the most special way. Pistachios are a favorite around here so this would be a great dish for a family bbq. Thanks for sharing.

    • Pistachio pudding usually can be found during the holidays around me. I’m not sure all stores even carry it. But when you find it, it’s worth stocking up!

  5. This is honestly completely new to me. Perhaps it’s because I live in Australia and that particular dish may not be popular here. I was even more surprised when I looked at the ingredients. It sounds like a delicious mixture but it’s funny how it’s called a salad. Will have to do more research on this dish. thanks for sharing (:

    • Nicolas – you know us Yanks have some strange ways of using words compared to your locals! I think this was a creation from the 1970s when Jello and Pudding ruled the menus!

For years we had watergate salad at every family gathering, picnic, or potluck. It was a staple!! Then for some reason it fell out of favor. I’ll have to make it for our family get-together. Our kids would remember but I’m sure the grandsons never heard of it.

    • Marisa, my family has recipes like that … it’s almost as if one day somebody said, “I’m bored with that, let’s try something new” and the regular standby was replaced.

  7. I don’t think I’ve ever had watergate salad. Pistachios and pineapple are two foods I like but I have never had them together. This salad sounds like a nice sweet treat.

  8. I’ve never tried this before! I need to find me some pistachio pudding mix! I’ve never seen them in my grocery store before so I didn’t even know it exists! I can’t wait to try.

    • Cammy, Larger stores are more likely to carry it all year around. My small town stores consider it a holiday item … so we’re coming up on the season they’ll have it in stock. I suppose it’s all about supply and demand.

    • It really is an interesting recipe. I’ve found most folks are on one side or the other … love it or leave it! LOL Try it out when you’ve got a large group so if you don’t like it, somebody else might!

My grandma used to make this every Christmas! She would always have it in a translucent pastel green Tupperware salad mixing bowl. She is gone now… I made this and it was absolutely delicious and definitely was nostalgic and brought back all kinds af feels. Your grandma’s handwriting looks just like mine and she would do the same thing with recipes.
